York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

In May 2017 York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust experienced an unprecedented cyber-attack, the effects of which were felt throughout the whole of the NHS. With many services affected and over 2,000 PCs infected. The Desktop Team played a pivotal role in ensuring continuity of service throughout the trust.

A small team of 9 engineers, covering multiple sites and spread up to 40 miles apart, worked tirelessly during the outbreak to check, isolate and clean individual PCs. Every PC in the trust needed checking manually and with nearly 6,000 PCs in use, this relatively small number of employees rose to the challenge. Staying at work overnight and at the weekends to give staff advice and support during this time, services were reinstated quickly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to patients.

“My team are now driven by the fact that their hard work throughout the year can be recognised in such a way. The award takes pride of place in our office to remind each of our team that hard work and commitment really does payoff” -  Nick Salisbury, Desktop Team Leader.
